AI Security for Local Government & Schools

Adopt AI in a way you can explain at a public meeting.

Local Government & Schools

Public Trust Built Into Every AI Decision

Towns, counties, special districts and school districts are being offered AI in almost every system they buy, and staff are already using it to draft letters, summarize meetings and answer residents and parents. Public bodies hold resident, student and law enforcement data, answer to the public for every decision, and work under records laws that private businesses do not. We help you adopt AI in a way you can explain at a public meeting.

Risks, Rules and How We Help

Where AI risk shows up in local government and schools

  • Staff using personal AI accounts for public business, putting resident or student information in tools the organization does not control.
  • Classroom and administrative AI tools adopted by individual teachers or departments without a privacy review.
  • Resident- and parent-facing chatbots that can give wrong answers about services, deadlines or eligibility, or reveal information they should not.
  • AI in procurement: vendors adding AI features to existing contracts without a clear answer on where the data goes.

The rules your AI use touches

  • FERPA: student education records may be shared with an AI vendor without consent only under narrow conditions, such as the school official exception, which requires the district to keep direct control over how the vendor uses the data.
  • COPPA: online services that collect information from children under 13 have additional obligations, which matter for classroom AI tools.
  • Public records: prompts, outputs and AI-drafted documents created in the course of public business may be public records under the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act and similar laws, so retention and disclosure need a plan.
  • Breach notification: South Carolina's data breach notification law applies when personal information is exposed, whatever tool exposed it.
  • CJIS: criminal justice information handled by police and courts is governed by the FBI CJIS Security Policy, which most general-purpose AI tools do not meet.
